    Finished my first gun!

Aside from the obvious workmanship, elegant proportions seem to be hard to achieve on pistols and you really nailed it. I've always wondered how silver wedding bands are done. Could you clear that up? Thanks.

    Checkering, Rigby Kit

Truely outstanding. I've been lusting after this gun for some time. Could you share which moulds and loads you are using and what kind of accuracy you are getting. Thanks

    MY HAMMER FROM HADES...

Find a friend with a MIG welder. Cone the mounting hole on the back side with a grinder. Fill with weld metal. Drill and file a new hole in the proper location.

    Original Baker rifle balls

I guess I'm the only one who is not in the know, but what is the "Percy Tenantry stash"? Thanks

    Yukon Hunter knife

I assume you know that you are the proud owner of a Russel Belt Knife knock-off. I got mine at the factory (Grohmann Knives Ltd.) in Pictou Nova Scotia in 1980.

    Williamsburg gun shop closed?

The local newspaper has reported that there have been layoffs due to the weak economy.

How many shots out of a rifled barrel?

The foregoing goes against the notion that gunsmiths "freshed" barrels that were "shot out". Maybe that's just myth. Ned Roberts ("The Muzzle-Loading Cap Lock Rifle") believed that with PRB, the patching was abrasive enough to wear out the barrel. Greased bullets could be shot indefinitely.

    Help on choosing a rifle

I personally would like a Tyron Creedmoor or Match for shooting conicals at longer ranges.

    Damaged Screw Head

One last tip on the MIG/TIG approach. Lay a nut on the screw head and weld up the hole.

    Mini Lathe

I opted for the 9 X 20 which comes with faceplate, four jaw, steady rest and follow rest. They go for $700-$800 and I figure when you add up the accesories you get more capacity for not much more money. On the downside, the four jaw is a kind of crude affair that is tricky to use and the...

    Tired little rifle

Building up the hammer with a MIG welder is pretty simple if it is not wrought iron. You probably have a buddy with a welder. They are pretty common nowadays. Then all you have to worry about is attacking it with files and Dremmel.

    Sharpening stone differences

I use Japanese water stones. They cut fast, there is no mess and best of all, they don't clog. The one drawback is that they wear faster but for perfectionists, they can be flattened. 1000 grit is good for general sharpening but they come in much finer grits.

    Cadet Rifles

VMI has an excellent museum in the chapel basement. I believe they have a ML cadet rifle but would not swear to it. Their web site has contact information under “research”.

    J.P. Gemmer spencer convesion

The Blackpowder Cartrige Rifles Magazine reprint has a picture of one which looks like a Hawken fore and aft of the Sencer action ( octagon barrel forestock, ramrod etc.). I guess the tricky part would be fitting the magazine to the rear stock.

    Short on Brass

Enco and McMaster Carr. Bigger selection at the later.

    Drill-pres mills?

The actual problem is that most drill presses have Morse Taper spindles. Because there is no thru-hole for the draw bar for the end mill holder, the end mill will grab and pull the holder out. With small drill presses with threaded spindles, an end mill can be held in the drill chuck and very...
