Absolute newbie, wondering which rifle to start out with?

Hello Bobznew, Welcome to the forum, it's an excellent place to learn from. The guns mentioned are very good deer guns and you will be most happy/productive buying one. I'll rock the boat a lil bit and suggest a reproduction 1858 2 band Enfield(Civil War gun). They are 58 caliber and very...

    we are a minority

I deer hunt with 20 guys from all over the state of Illinois. The ages range from young to old, professional, blue collar, college students, high school students. It's a great group of people. We sit and do drives. 2 of us carry muzzleloaders, the rest shotguns. We pretty much harvest deer...

    1862 CS Richmond Musket

I monitor the NSSA forum cause those guys are very familiar with the 58 caliber and the Italian reproductions. A lot of these guns shoot to the left out of the box. The sights don't allow for windage. They recommend 2 things. Use kentucky windage or resolder the sight closed and re-grind it to...

    1862 CS Richmond Musket

I'm curious, how does different percusion caps change the point of impact? Any idea how much it will throw it off?

    1861 springfield questions

Rebel, can you go into a little detail on how you changed your rear sight? Did you solder the sight closed and file a new spot or just file more on one side of the sight? Thanks fo any info.

I read about that in this forum recently and it got me thinking about possibly using one (1842 Springfield smoothbore musket)for turkey hunting. Any body use one for that purpose? Thanks for any info.

New Parker/Hale 1858 for deer hunting

Glad to get you stirred up. It's a great gun. You'll see other posts on this forum about people using the 1858 for Elk and other big game. I only use the battle sights. 60 yards or less I have to aim low, 65 - 125 I put it right on, 130 - 175 yards I aim a just a couple of inches high. This...

New Parker/Hale 1858 for deer hunting

I switched to a 1858 2 band Enfield (Euroarms) a couple of years ago. My shotgun has collected a lot of dust since then. I'm totally sold on the power of the 58 caliber. I use 85 grains of RS Pyrodex and use Maxi hunters and Buffalo bullets. I used a shotgun for over 20 years deer hunting and...

    Lyman Plains Pistol

I bought a 50 caliber percussion Lyman's Plains Pistol last January. Nice gun, it has turned into one of my favorites. Very accurate. I've read a lot of good things about them and wasn't dissapointed. Illinois will only let me use it for our new 3rd season, so I have to wait until january to...

    Reloading directly after firing

Here in Illinois we can have 2 or more deer permits for firearm/muzzleloader seasons. I have shot deer and the other deer run 20 yards and stop and wait for their poor buddy who bought a 58 caliber bullet. In the heat of hunting I will reload almost immedietly and have never had a problem. I...

    ML sidearm for backup.

Why is there such a big difference in state laws concerning ML handguns? Here in Illinois, they can only be used in the late season, why not the other gun seasons?

    Presentation cases??

How about plans for building one also? Thanks.

    Unused deerpermits in Illinois

Got my 2 deer permits for shotgun season. Of course I will be using the 58 caliber 1858 Enfield Deer slayer. Those poor deer they don't have a chance!!!

    JP Murray Musketoon

And the bravery those men exhibited on the field of battle with those huge 58 caliber chunks of lead flying thru the air!

    Question for the Southpaw Shooters?

    ARMI SAN MARCO???

Thanks for the parts info. I have a ASM 1860 Colt Army that I built from a CVA kit 20 years ago. Losing my timing after shooting about 25 rounds is the only problem I have had. I load 30 grains of Pyrodex and that gun is very accurate.
